Muslims and the Islamic world must shoulder the responsibility of tackling terrorist extremism by understanding the origins of politicised Islam, said writer and political analyst, Abdulla Bajad Al-Otaibi, during Day One of the 2017 World Government Summit in Dubai.

“Eight decades ago the Muslim Brotherhood disseminated their ideology, based on the teachings of three Islamic philosophers, of the rebuilding of an Islamic Caliphate,” said Al-Otaibi. “This ideology has permeated and been inherited by all extremist Islamic factions that exist today.”

For governments to effectively combat the roots of politicised Islam, Al-Otaibi recommended a three-pronged approached, comprising a comprehensive strategy that promotes tolerance in religious discourse, legislation that addresses the issues of politicised Islam and most importantly, an end to private and government funding of terrorist factions.
